Kids’ Hair Consultations

Disney via We Heart It
Just like any other client, you need to have a consultation before cutting kids’ hair! But it’s a little trickier because you have to include parents/guardians. Communicate with them about their desired end result. Setting realistic goals is key. If a parent shows you a picture of intricate design work or a fade, you may have to tell them gently that their little one probably won’t sit still for that amount of work.
Also, consider bringing up pricing. Some parents may automatically think that children’s cuts are cheaper, but it’s still your time, so let them know up front.
Don’t forget to include the kids in the conversation. This will help them get familiar with their environment and you. Take a moment to explain the cape to them. (And who doesn’t need a “superhero cape”?) If you’re using clippers, show them to the child, and tell them it may tickle a little. Above all, avoid the word “cut”. To kids, “cut” means that they might get hurt. Use “trim” or “fix” instead.
Distract & Reward
It’s all about distractions when it comes to the littlest clients. Keeping them still is the hardest part. If the parents are good with a little screen time, use an iPad or tablet to put on a kid-friendly show or video.
Just like how the doctor offers a lollipop at the end of a visit, offer a prize or treat to the kids who sit still! They’ll be more likely to behave and calm down.
Your Go-To Product

There’s one product you can’t live without when cutting kids’ hair: a detangler! No one likes to have their hair pulled while brushing out, but kids especially have tender scalps. Before cutting, get as many knots out as possible with a detangler. We’ve linked some below if you’re not sure where to start.
With a little patience, good communication, and the right product, cutting kids’ hair can be a way to build your client base right from the start! It also feels pretty good to see your littlest clients (and their parents!) happy!
