Stylists are on the frontlines of hair fashion. As you should be. But the battle about what to wear in the salon is far from easy. Do you go comfy or trendy? What can best conceal those bleach spots? Are jeans considered unprofessional? We asked on our social media pages what stylists wear, and here’s what you said!
The Typical Stylist Wear: All Black Everything
Many of you told us all black was the way to go! While it’s easy to look like the cast of American Horror Story Coven, all black outfits mask color (and coffee) spills. And it might remind you of cosmo school, but those all black outfits have another benefit. They create a solid background for your clients to fully see their cut and color.
And when it comes to (rocking all) black, Ricardo Tisci said it best: : “Black is always elegant. It is the most complete color in the whole world, made of all the colors in the palette.”
Casual, But Not Sloppy
In many industries, jeans are only for a casual Friday or not at all. But a lot of the responses said jeans were A-okay in the salon as long as the look was pulled together. Tina said she wore, “Lots of jeans, Converse, and a top that doesn’t mind being splashed with color!”
As for tops, tank tops can be real tricky. You don’t want to have your armpit in your client’s face as you’re styling or cutting! We loved Diane’s suggestion of wearing tanks with a lightweight oversized shawl. They’re light but still give coverage. Plus, they add an element of interest to your outfit.
Aprons, Aprons, Aprons
And of course your salon outfit isn’t complete without your apron! Investing in a good one will go a long way to protecting your clothes. Plus, as Deedee pointed out, they help hide a bleach spot and are handy for holding things! And a lot of brands have their own custom aprons, which is a great way to showcase your favorite product lines.
The beauty industry is diverse, and so is style! So what should stylists wear in the salon? The main thing is to be yourself and use your style to brand yourself but also be practical. Let us know in the comments what your go-to items are!
